How to determine modem capabilities?

By Phone user

If you are not sure whether your modem has voice capability, there are a few ways to check it:

1. Run RingCentral Modem Setup or Modem Detection and see reported capabilities
2. Read the modem/computer specifications or contact your modem/computer manufacturer
3. Check whether modem wave device is present in the Device Manager (Windows 95,98,2000)

Wave device presence indicates voice capable modem, given that correct modem driver is used:
1) Click Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel
2) Double-click System icon. You’ll see System Properties dialog.
3) Select Device Manager tab.
4) Open Sound, video and game controllers branch.

A. Wave Device for Voice Modem is listed – then wave device is installed
B. Wave Device for Voice Modem is listed and marked with a (!) – there is a problem with it. In such case, reinstalling modem drivers recommended
C. No Wave Device for Voice Modem listed – the modem is not voice capable or the modem driver is installed incorrectly

4. Run Windows modem diagnostics to get information about the modem (Windows 95,98)

1) Run Windows modem diagnostics
2) After Windows has queried the modem and received responses, note the response on AT+FCLASS=? command. It may look like “0,1,8,80″. Usually number 8 indicates voice capability, number 80 – speakerphone capability.

NOTE: Sometimes modem driver can contain a mistake and response on AT+FCLASS=? may be misleading.
